Sri Dasbodh (2.4) भक्ती निरूपण

Sri Dasbodh (2.4) भक्ती निरूपण
(Devotion Explained)
Sri Samartha now explains various aspects of Devotion. Earlier, he dealt with various attributes human humans possess. He also demonstrated misuse of human prowess while narrating despicable traits of men. Like all other Saints and Sages he too is extremely pained and distressed looking at dismal state of human behaviour, which has lost sight of the best, permanent and conducive to overall welfare of man and society at large.
According to Sri Samartha the very purpose of human birth is to know his own Self, which is nothing other than Divinity. He therefore describes path of devotion in his following discourse.

He says, one acquires human birth after innumerable noble actions performed in earlier sojourns and only the fortunate ones  tread the righteous path. Indeed, accumulated merit confers human birth in the first place and a noble ancestry followed by stipulated actions as enshrined in Vedas and Shastra ; moreover, noble desires and worship of the Lord occur by virtue of merits earned earlier. Devotion unto the Lord, along with company of Saints is yet more beneficial. Entire lifetime of such persons is fulfilled and that should be considered best benefit indeed. One should nurture true love of the Lord within his conscience and a group of Lord’s devotees outside. That leads to celebration of festivals, where glories of the Lord are sung incessantly and love unto the Lord becomes twice as much.
We have acquired human birth and we must fulfil it somehow. The very rare heaven comes to hand while doing so.
One should engage in ceremonial worship or pursue compassion, charity, service unto fellow humans; or else,  simply sing glories of the Lord. One may jettison worldly matters out of remorse or trudge path of devotion; or else, acquire company of Saints.
One should study various Scriptures in depth or at least undertake pilgrimages. Or else, engage in continuos recitals in order to atone sin.
One should engage in philanthropy (परोपकार) or pursue path of Knowledge; or else, discover quintessence of discourses heard from Saints and Sadguru.
One should obey dictates of Vedas , follow ritualistic worship or simple worship, which grants eligibility and authority to acquire Knowledge.
One should worship the Lord and fulfil his life through body, speech and mind ; moreover, by means of flower, leaf, fruit or even water alone.
One should strive to attain something worthwhile having acquired human birth ; however, his human sojourn is wasted if one fails to do so and he becomes a burden for the earth.
It is just apt for the human body to acquire something beneficial for one’s own Self (आत्महित). One should divert his mind and wealth unto the Lord as per his ability.
Indeed the one that does not follow any of the above is a corpse in spite of being alive. He has troubled his mother unnecessarily by taking this birth ! Such persons never indulge in worship, recitations, meditation, everyday’s religious and spiritual practices. Moreover, they do not engage in  devotion, loving service, allegiance, vows, God, religion and even guests!  In addition, they do not possess enlightened intellect, noble qualities, penchant to listen Lord’s glory and spiritual discourses. They do not have company of the good and godly, pure conscience and therefore they do not attain Moksha due to false pride and ego. They are devoid of morality, natural justice, means to acquire merit, eligibility to attain heaven and discriminative faculty that distinguishes just and unjust actions.
They do not possess learning, wealth, luxury of clever dealings, art and the beautiful attribute of Saraswati, namely wonderful speech and oratory.
Moreover, there is no peace, forgiveness, ability to fulfil vows, kinship, discretion of auspicious and inauspiciousness and Sadhana  with them.
They do not possess purity, righteousness, ability to pursue ordained duties, good thoughts and neither worldly or heavenly joys. They are just happy-go-lucky whimsical persons that behave errands.
There is nothing like righteous conduct, worship, knowledge (of the Self), detachment, Yoga, courage etc if tried to find in them.
There is neither asceticism, renunciation, equality,, noble values or love and respect unto the Lord. He is not happy witnessing good qualities in others ; he doesn’t have joy of philanthropy ; his inner conscience doesn’t demonstrate even an iota of God’s Love.
While looking at such persons they appear like living corpses ; holy persons should avoid even talking to them.
Devotion unto the Lord is available only to those possessing immense merit. People get the fruit as per their action ; they reap whatever they sow !
